Taiwan’s navy has rolled out a new class of fixed-wing, propeller-driven drones it calls “mid-size suicide drones,” locally built to sharpen its strike capability amid rising tensions with China.

The deployment follows months of stepped-up military drills by Taipei, designed to test rapid response and precision targeting in waters it considers contested. Taiwan’s defense officials say the drones can loiter for hours, then dive into targets at low altitude, making them hard to shoot down. Their arrival coincides with a push to reduce reliance on imported hardware and speed up domestic arms production.

Video released by the navy shows the drones taking off from a fast-moving craft, suggesting they can be launched from ships or shore sites close to a potential conflict zone. Military sources say each drone carries a small warhead and can be programmed to crash into ships or coastal radar sites, mirroring tactics Ukraine has used against Russian vessels in the Black Sea. Taiwan’s navy has not disclosed how many it has or when full operational use will begin.

Analysts see these drones as part of a broader shift toward asymmetric warfare—cheap, scalable weapons that can blunt a larger invading force. With China amassing amphibious ships and missiles near Taiwan, the new drones offer Taipei a way to contest control of the seas without matching Beijing ship-for-ship. The next step is integrating them into real-time targeting networks, so they can be guided by satellites or manned patrol planes. If they prove effective, similar models could appear across the region, turning small, expendable drones into a standard tool of naval deterrence.
