Daniel Kinahan, the alleged boss of one of Europeโ€™s most-watched crime networks, landed in Dublin on Sunday after being extradited from Dubai to face charges of running a global drugs and money-laundering operation that reached Britain, Spain and the US.

Kinahan, 44, was arrested in the United Arab Emirates in April. His arrival in Ireland comes less than 48 hours after a court in Dubai approved his transfer, ending a six-month legal fight. Irish police confirmed he was taken into custody at Dublin Airport and is now in custody ahead of court hearings expected later this week.

US authorities named Kinahan in 2022 as one of three leaders of the Kinahan Organised Crime Group. Washington offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest, calling him a kingpin who used luxury sports cars, high-end property and professional football to launder billions in drug profits. Spanish, British and Irish police have long accused the group of importing tonnes of cocaine through ports in Rotterdam, Antwerp and Dublin, then distributing it across Europe. Kinahan has always denied involvement in organised crime, describing himself as a legitimate businessman.

The extradition marks a major win for European and American law enforcement. Prosecutors hope his detention will force open new leads in long-running investigations into cartel-linked shipments and offshore money flows. Kinahanโ€™s case has also put pressure on football clubs and agents who have worked with him, with some sponsors now reviewing ties. If convicted, he faces life imprisonment under Irish laws that treat gang leaders as aggravated offenders. His next court appearance is scheduled for Friday, where a judge will decide on bail or continued detention ahead of trial.
