Summerween is in full swing as candy brands roll out Halloween treats months early, with pumpkin-spice gummy worms and black-and-orange Reeseโ€™s Peanut Butter Cups already crowding store shelves.

This isnโ€™t just a quirky trendโ€”itโ€™s a calculated power move by the $11 billion U.S. candy industry to stretch the Halloween season into a year-round cash grab. The shift started in the early 2010s when retailers like Walmart and Target began pushing back โ€œholiday creep,โ€ stocking holiday candy in September to clear warehouse space and boost third-quarter sales. Social media has turbocharged the trend: TikTok and Instagram feeds now explode with โ€œSummerweenโ€ memes and unboxing videos of Halloween candy in July, normalizing the idea that spooky sweets arenโ€™t just for October.

Last year, 34% of Halloween candy was sold before September, up from 22% in 2018, according to NielsenIQ. Brands like Hershey, Mars, and Mondelez are leaning in hard, launching limited-edition โ€œspookyโ€ versions of bestsellers like Skittles, M&Mโ€™s, and Oreo cookies as early as June. The strategy isnโ€™t just about Halloween anymoreโ€”itโ€™s about creating a year-round โ€œfear seasonโ€ that overlaps with back-to-school marketing, Fourth of July barbecues, and even Valentineโ€™s Day, all while avoiding the dreaded โ€œpost-Halloween candy dumpโ€ when unsold stock gets marked down.

What happens next is predictable: the creep will keep spreading. Retailers are already testing โ€œChristmas in Julyโ€ promotions, and some candy makers are eyeing โ€œGlowoweenโ€ (Halloween in neon colors) for spring. The real question isnโ€™t whether the trend will growโ€”itโ€™s how far it can go before consumers push back against the relentless commercialization of holidays. One thingโ€™s certain: the candy aisle will keep getting spookier, earlier, and longer.
