Strategy CEO Phong Le said selling all of the companyโ€™s bitcoin at about $60,000 in June and buying back at roughly $80,000 weeks later was the โ€œright trade,โ€ defending the move as a way to cover corporate capital costs. The comments, made to The Block, highlight how even crypto-native firms must balance market timing with cash needs. Le did not say how much bitcoin Strategy held but confirmed the sale and repurchase happened within weeks.

The trade reflects a growing reality for companies that hold bitcoin on their balance sheets. Corporate treasuries often need liquidity to fund operations, payroll or debt, forcing them to sell assets at market peaks rather than hold indefinitely. Bitcoinโ€™s volatilityโ€”swinging from $50,000 to $70,000 within weeksโ€”makes timing critical. Strategyโ€™s approach suggests a pragmatic shift: treat bitcoin like a liquid asset when needed, not just a long-term store of value.

This isnโ€™t an isolated case. In 2023, MicroStrategy came under pressure to sell bitcoin after its heavy borrowing left it with high interest costs. It raised $500 million in convertible notes last year, partly to service debt, and has sold bitcoin multiple times to meet obligations. Strategyโ€™s move follows a similar logic. The companyโ€™s cash needs likely outweighed the opportunity cost of missing further upside.

What happens next is unclear. If bitcoin continues rising, more firms may face the same dilemmaโ€”sell now to cover costs or hold and risk volatility. The episode also raises questions about corporate bitcoin strategies. Should companies treat bitcoin as a strategic reserve or a tradable asset? As interest rates stay higher for longer, liquidity pressures may force more balance-sheet bitcoin sales, even at a perceived cost.
