Researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces have discovered that brown-lipped snails, or Cepaea nemoralis, can adjust their slime's properties to suit various needs. This finding was published in the journal Science and highlights the snail's ability to produce five distinct types of mucus, each serving a unique function. The study was led by Ph.D. student Mariella Gabler and her team, who conducted their experiments in central Europe.

This research sheds light on the complexities of snail slime, which has long fascinated scientists. Snails can modify the proportions of proteins and ions in their mucus to create different types, ranging from lubricants for movement to defensive substances against predators. Gabler notes that understanding these mechanisms could inspire engineers to develop new materials, potentially leading to innovations in wound healing and drug delivery.

In their experiments, Gabler and her colleagues collected snails during rainy weather and provided them with a diet of cucumbers, salad, and lichen. They coaxed the snails into producing their various slimes, using tweezers to collect samples of both adhesive and protective mucuses. The findings reveal not only the versatility of snail mucus but also its potential applications in various fields, from materials science to medicine.

This research is significant as it demonstrates how a simple creature can adapt its biological functions in sophisticated ways. The ability to produce different types of slime based on environmental needs could pave the way for bio-inspired solutions in technology and healthcare, underscoring the importance of studying natural systems for innovative advancements.
