Spotify announced it has reached 300 million Premium subscribers, marking a milestone that no other audio streaming service has achieved. This figure was reported on Tuesday, revealing that the company gained 7 million paying subscribers in the second quarter, a 9% increase year over year.

This growth follows Spotify's continuous efforts to expand its user base amid a competitive streaming landscape. The company's latest earnings report also highlighted a rise in monthly active users, which grew 12% to 777 million. Revenue increased 14% to 4.8 billion euros, with a record gross margin of 33.4%, indicating improved profitability as the company benefits from its scale.

Financial details from the report show a significant climb in operating income, which soared 61% year over year to 655 million euros, along with a net income of 545 million euros. The bulk of Spotify's revenue came from its subscription service, which accounted for 4.3 billion euros of the total, while ad-supported revenue remained relatively modest, growing only 3%. The average revenue per Premium subscriber also rose by 7%, suggesting that Spotify has room to increase prices without losing customers.

Looking ahead, Spotify projects it will reach 305 million Premium subscribers and 788 million monthly active users by the third quarter. However, the company anticipates a slight dip in gross margin to 32.9%. This forecast raises questions about the sustainability of its growth, as maintaining profitability will be crucial. Investors will be closely monitoring these figures, especially gross margin, to gauge whether Spotify's business model can continue to thrive in an increasingly crowded market.
