Andres Manuel Lopez Beltran, the son of former Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has accused the United States of revoking his visa in a politically motivated action. He made the claim in a public letter addressed to U.S. President Donald Trump, which he shared on social media late Thursday.
This allegation comes amid a broader trend of visa cancellations targeting Mexican officials. The Trump administration has characterized these revocations as part of an effort to crack down on individuals linked to drug cartels. Lopez Beltran specifically pointed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and his deputy, Christopher Landau, as the officials responsible for the visa revocation. In his letter, he emphasized that these officials have no evidence against him and called the action โarrogant.โ
Lopez Beltran, who recently stepped down as the leader of the left-wing Morena party, is a notable figure in Mexican politics. His father founded the Morena party in 2011 and served as president from 2018 until 2024. Currently, another Morena politician, Claudia Sheinbaum, holds the presidency. Lopez Beltran is expected to run for a seat in the Chamber of Deputies next year, having recently taken on a more active political role after focusing on his chocolate business during much of his fatherโs presidency.
In response to Lopez Beltran's letter, Sheinbaum expressed concern about potential interference in Mexican politics, stating she was not aware of any investigations against him by Mexican prosecutors. While she has pledged cooperation with the U.S. on issues of cross-border crime, she also asserted the importance of protecting Mexico's sovereignty from foreign interference. This situation underscores ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Mexican officials, particularly regarding the U.S. administration's tough stance on drug trafficking and organized crime.
