Ipsos poll reveals UK adults support shorts in summer office attire

As summer heatwaves roll in, many professionals are grappling with what to wear to work amid rising temperatures. The debate centers on whether casual attire, like shorts and strappy tops, is acceptable in the office, especially when comfort is a priority.

This discussion comes as various cities, including Tokyo, are encouraging more relaxed dress codes to help employees cope with the heat. However, this has sparked backlash, with some complaining about the sight of hairy legs in the workplace. In the UK, a recent Ipsos poll found that 62% of adults believe it is acceptable for men to wear shorts at work, while 63% support the same for women. Yet, opinions vary on what constitutes appropriate summer attire.

Experts in fashion and workplace etiquette weigh in on the topic. Designer Amanda Wakeley advises that if you doubt the appropriateness of your shorts, they are likely too short. She suggests opting for tailored shorts that reach the kneecap, paired with a crisp shirt or lightweight blazer. Meanwhile, both Wakeley and stylist Clare Chambers strongly advise against flip-flops, which are perceived as too casual. Instead, they recommend breathable but polished footwear, like woven flats or refined leather sandals, that complement a professional look.

While casual styles are becoming more accepted, certain items remain controversial. According to the Ipsos survey, only 40% of adults find tank tops acceptable for women at work, compared to just 24% for men. As more companies reconsider dress codes in light of employee comfort and changing cultural norms, the conversation around appropriate summer workwear will likely continue to evolve.
