Scotland and the Netherlands criticised the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) restructuring of the 2027 50‑over World Cup, saying the changes risk weakening the integrity and credibility of international cricket. The two associate nations voiced their concerns during a press conference in Colombo, where they highlighted the potential impact on their chances to compete at the highest level.

The ICC announced in 2023 that the 2027 tournament would feature only ten teams instead of the current twelve, with a single round‑robin group and a straight final. The decision was justified by the governing body as a way to reduce costs, shorten the schedule, and make the event more attractive to broadcasters and sponsors. However, the cut in team numbers eliminates two associate sides that have fought hard to qualify in recent editions, and it concentrates power in the hands of the Test‑playing nations. The new format also reduces the total number of matches from 45 to 33, meaning fewer opportunities for emerging players to showcase their talents on the world stage.

Scotland’s captain, Kyle Coetzer, warned that the move could create a “two‑tier” system where only the top teams get regular exposure. The Dutch captain, Mark Jenkins, echoed the sentiment, adding that the reduced schedule limits the revenue streams that help fund grassroots development
