Researchers find 1-2 hours weekly of strength training lowers early death risk by 13%

Strength training for just 1-2 hours weekly reduces early death risk by 13%, especially from heart and neurological diseases. Combining this with 150 weekly minutes of aerobic exercise cuts overall mโ€ฆ

Scientists find the strength training โ€œsweet spotโ€ for a longer life

Researchers have pinpointed a simple exercise sweet spot: just one to two hours of strength training a week can add years to your life. A study published this week shows that people who lifted weights for 90 to 120 minutes weekly had a 13 percent lower risk of early death. The benefits were strongest against heart disease and neurological conditions, proving that heavy weights arenโ€™t neededโ€”consistent effort is what counts.

The findings come as public health experts push for clearer fitness guidelines. Most adults already know aerobic exercise like walking or cycling is good for the heart, but muscle-strengthening activities have been overlooked. This study fills that gap, showing that resistance trainingโ€”whether with dumbbells, resistance bands, or bodyweightโ€”delivers measurable health rewards. It challenges the idea that only intense gym sessions count.

The data comes from nearly 100,000 adults tracked for up to 10 years. Those who combined strength training with at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity per week saw the biggest payoff: a 45 percent drop in overall mortality. Even small amounts of strength workโ€”around 30 to 60 minutes weeklyโ€”cut early death risk by 10 percent. The gains were seen across age groups, sexes, and fitness levels, suggesting this routine is accessible to almost anyone.

Doctors say this should reset expectations. You donโ€™t need hours in the gym or expensive equipment. Ten minutes of squats, push-ups, or resistance band work a few times a week could add years to your life. The message is clear: move often, lift sometimes, and the payoff isnโ€™t just bigger musclesโ€”itโ€™s longer life.
