A team of scientists has discovered why snake embryos twist into a neat right-handed spiral inside their eggs. Their bodies grow faster than their developing guts, creating a physical tether that forces them to coil as they lengthen. The finding comes from studying more than 900 embryos and using CT scans to trace the hidden mechanics behind the curl.

This spiral shape isnโ€™t just a quirk of developmentโ€”itโ€™s a survival trait. Snakes evolved from lizards that laid eggs with straight embryos. Over millions of years, the spiral shape allowed eggs to pack more muscle and movement into a compact space, increasing hatchling strength. Researchers believe the same growth imbalanceโ€”rapid body elongation versus slower gut formationโ€”guides the twisting motion in all snake species, from pythons to vipers.

The team used high-resolution imaging to watch the process in real time. They found that the yolk sac, which feeds the embryo, gets pulled taut as the body stretches. That tension forces the embryo to bend, creating the signature spiral. The discovery overturns older ideas that the shape was driven by egg shape or shell pressure. Instead, itโ€™s a self-generated twist, hardwired into snake biology.

Now, scientists want to test whether the same mechanism applies to other legless reptiles. If confirmed, it could reveal new clues about how snakes lost their limbsโ€”and why they move the way they do. The spiral isnโ€™t just a developmental quirk; itโ€™s a key to understanding one of evolutionโ€™s most successful body plans.
