Samsung’s latest foldable flagships might feel like sleek engineering marvels, but beneath that polished exterior lies a familiar, frustrating story. We’ve been impressed by Samsung’s new foldable form factor in our Galaxy Z Fold 8 hands-on , yet a fresh teardown from the folks at iFixit reminds us that ultra-thin foldables still come with major repairability trade-offs.

iFixit has given the Galaxy Z Fold 8 a provisional 4/10 repairability score, hampered by an extremely fragile inner screen, an intricate hinge, and a dust-resistance rating that isn’t quite practical for real-world use.

According to iFixit, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 scores a few points for using standard Phillips/JIS screws and for including a modular USB-C port that isn’t soldered directly to the main board. It also uses new silicon-carbon battery tech , yielding an 8.8% capacity boost over the Fold 7, and pairs those cells with Samsung’s excellent pull-jacket removal system. However, there are two of these batteries in the foldable, and accessing one requires removing the fragile outer display, putting an expensive component at risk just to service a consumable part.

The real nightmare begins if you ever need to service the inner display or the hinge. During iFixit’s teardown, the plastic bezel around the inner screen chipped and broke apart, ultimately destroying the delicate foldable OLED.

Furthermore, the IP4X rating doesn’t protect against pocket lint or fine debris. When subjected to dirt and sand under microscopic testing, the hinge began to sound like it was “chewing gravel,” much like you can hear at the 5:40 mark in YouTuber JerryRigEverything’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 durability test video .

Since Samsung typically pairs the inner screen and hinge into a single replacement assembly, servicing either will likely require gutting the entire device, making a DIY fix practically non-viable. iFixit also notes that official replacement parts for last year’s Fold 7 remain scarce, and that doesn’t help the outlook for Fold 8’s parts. If you’re buying the Fold 8 with the intent to hold on to it for a fair few years, you may want to keep your repair expectations grounded.
