A Russian drone struck the headquarters of Ukraine’s state security service (SBU) in Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Tuesday. The attack, which hit the building in the capital’s central district, occurred at about 10 a.m. local time and was confirmed by SBU officials. No casualties were reported, but the drone caused structural damage to the front façade and shattered several windows. The incident was livestreamed by the SBU on its official social media accounts, showing the impact zone and emergency crews clearing debris.

The SBU is the main domestic intelligence agency in Ukraine, responsible for counter‑intelligence, counter‑terrorism, and protecting national security. Targeting its headquarters is a rare escalation in the war that began in February 2022, when Russia invaded Ukraine. Earlier this year the SBU has already faced several shelling incidents and cyber‑attacks, and this drone strike marks the first time a Russian aircraft has directly hit the agency’s main office. Analysts say the attack is designed to undermine confidence in Ukraine’s internal security and to disrupt the flow of intelligence that helps the Ukrainian military plan operations against Russian forces. It also signals that Russia is willing to extend its offensive reach into the heart of Kyiv.

Zelenskyy condemned the attack on his official channel, calling it a “shocking act of aggression” that would not deter Ukraine. He urged the public to stay calm and assured that security measures would be tightened. The SBU spokesperson said that the building’s emergency response team had contained the damage and that the agency would continue its operations without interruption. Moscow’s foreign ministry issued a statement denying any involvement and accusing Kyiv of “provoking the situation” with its own strikes on Russian territory. Ukrainian intelligence officials are reportedly reviewing the drone’s flight path and the security gaps that allowed it to penetrate the city’s airspace.

In the coming days Ukraine is expected to increase air defence coverage over key government sites and to investigate the drone’s origin. The Ukrainian military may also consider a targeted retaliation against the drone manufacturer or the facilities that support Russian drone production. For Russia, the attack could be a warning that its drones are becoming more lethal and that it must adapt its tactics to protect its own assets. The incident raises the stakes for Kyiv, as it underscores the vulnerability of even the most secure government buildings to modern aerial weapons.
