Russia has protested to Japanโ€™s ambassador in Moscow over comments made by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding President Vladimir Putin's visit to the disputed Kuril Islands. The visit, which took place last Thursday, marked Putin's first time on the islands, escalating tensions between the two nations. Takaichi labeled the trip as โ€œgraveโ€ and โ€œabsolutely unacceptable,โ€ asserting that the Northern Territories are inherently part of Japanโ€™s territory both historically and under international law.

The protests come amid a backdrop of frayed relations between Russia and Japan, rooted in the longstanding issue of the Kuril Islands, which Japan refers to as the Northern Territories. These islands were seized by the Soviet Union in 1945, resulting in the expulsion of the local Japanese population. The territorial dispute has stymied any efforts to sign a post-World War II peace treaty, leaving diplomatic relations in a perpetual state of strain. Takaichiโ€™s remarks have intensified anti-Russian sentiment in Japan, complicating the possibility of mending ties in the future.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov condemned Takaichi's statements, claiming they had โ€œcrossed the line of decencyโ€ and criticized Japan's militaristic stance. This escalation reflects a broader trend, as relations between Moscow and Tokyo have deteriorated significantly since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Japan, aligned with G7 partners, has imposed sanctions on Russia and has provided financial and non-lethal defense assistance to Ukraine. Notably, Japan has also supported Ukraineโ€™s air defense indirectly by supplying the United States with Patriot interceptor missiles.

Analysts suggest that Putin's visit to the Kuril Islands serves as a warning to Japan against deepening its support for Ukraine, particularly through direct military assistance. Although Japan has recently relaxed its pacifist policies by lifting a ban on lethal weapon exports, it still faces restrictions that prevent it from supplying lethal military equipment to wartime nations. This complex geopolitical landscape indicates that the Kuril Islands dispute will likely continue to hinder diplomatic efforts between Russia and Japan for the foreseeable future.
