Researchers from MIT Lincoln Laboratory have been capturing sounds from beneath the Arctic Ocean, revealing a diverse array of natural and human-made noises. The team deployed advanced sensors during the U.S. Navy's Operation Ice Camp, specifically in March 2026, to study these under-ice acoustics. Their work highlights the complex soundscape of the region, which includes everything from the cracking of sea ice to the calls of beluga whales and the hum of shipping vessels.

This research comes at a crucial time as climate change continues to impact Arctic ecosystems. As sea ice diminishes, understanding the acoustic environment may provide insights into how marine life adapts to changing conditions. Additionally, the findings could improve navigation and communication for vessels operating in icy waters, which is increasingly important as shipping routes evolve due to melting ice.

The team employed a higher-fidelity geophone, an enhanced version of the sensors used in previous operations.
