A recount in a contested May Indiana state Senate primary has put Republican Paula Copenhaver, who was backed by President Donald Trump, ahead of incumbent Spencer Deery.

The shift comes after an initial count showed Deery, a sitting state senator, narrowly leading by 42 votes. Copenhaverโ€™s campaign requested a recount, citing irregularities in absentee ballot handling in Putnam County. The recount, completed over the weekend, flipped the result, giving Copenhaver a 28-vote lead. Indiana law allows recounts when margins are within 0.5% of the total votes cast.

This primary battle highlights the growing influence of Trump-endorsed candidates in state-level races, especially in Indiana, where conservative factions are pushing for more hardline positions. Deery, a moderate Republican, had clashed with Trump-aligned groups over issues like school funding and Medicaid expansion. Copenhaverโ€™s victory would signal a shift toward a more Trump-aligned voice in the state legislature, potentially affecting future policy debates.

What happens next? The final results must be certified by the county election board by June 17. If Deery challenges the recount outcome, he could file a lawsuit within 20 days. Meanwhile, Copenhaver is already preparing for the general election in November, where she will face Democratic challenger Mark DeSalle. The race underscores the increasing polarization in state politics, where even small margins can determine control over key legislative agendas.
