A 7.7โ€‘magnitude earthquake struck off eastern Indonesia early Saturday, killing at least five people and triggering dozens of aftershocks that have turned hills into landslides and blocked key roads. The quake, measured by the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics (BMKG), hit near the province of East Nusa Tenggara, close to the island of Timor. Rescue teams are already combing the wreckage of collapsed homes and broken bridges.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates grind together, producing frequent and powerful quakes. The country has already suffered several deadly events in recent years, including the 2018 earthquake that devastated Lombok and the 2019 quake in Sumba. The 7.7โ€‘magnitude shock is one of the strongest in the region in the past decade. It struck at a depth of about 30 kilometers, making the shaking intense enough to trigger landslides on steep slopes and to damage infrastructure that was built to older building codes.

The Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) has declared a state of emergency for the affected districts. Emergency services are conducting searchโ€‘andโ€‘rescue operations, while medical teams are treating the injured. Local authorities have set up temporary shelters for displaced families. The BMKG issued a tsunami warning after the quake, but it was later lifted once the sea was confirmed to be stable. International aid agencies, including the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, are monitoring the situation and preparing to deploy resources if needed.

In the coming days, rescue teams will focus on locating survivors and clearing debris from critical roads to restore supply lines. Authorities will also assess structural damage to schools, hospitals, and homes, and plan for the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure. The event underscores the need for stronger building codes and better emergency preparedness in Indonesiaโ€™s most seismically active provinces. As aftershocks continue to shake the region, the risk of further damage remains high, and communities are urged to stay alert and follow official guidance.
