Zelensky told reporters in Kyiv on Saturday that up to 50,000 North Korean soldiers could be sent to fight with Russia in Ukraine. The claim came during a press briefing in which he warned that Pyongyang would gain valuable battlefield experience and advanced military technology if it followed through. He did not reveal the source of the information.

The statement matters because it would be the first time North Korea is rumored to deploy large ground forces to a foreign war. The country has supplied Russia with missiles, drones and ammunition for years, but troop deployment would deepen that partnership. It would also give North Korea a chance to test its soldiers in real combat and to learn from Russian tactics. For Ukraine and its allies, the prospect raises the stakes of a war that has already drawn in a wide range of international actors.

Zelensky offered no evidence, but analysts point to reports of North Korean mercenaries in Crimea and the supply of unmanned aircraft to Russian forces in the Donbas. The figure of 50,000 would represent about a tenth of North Korea’s active army, a significant commitment. Russia has denied any formal agreement, calling the claim “baseless.” Meanwhile, the United Nations and several Western governments have warned that North Korea’s involvement could trigger new sanctions or a diplomatic backlash.

If the rumor proves true, Ukraine may intensify its counter‑insurgency efforts and seek more support from NATO. The United States and European Union could tighten sanctions on Pyongyang and its suppliers. Russia, in turn, might confirm or deny the deployment, which would influence its strategic calculations. The situation also highlights the need for renewed arms‑control talks, as the possibility of North Korean troops on the Eastern European front could destabilise the region and complicate global security.
