No Dogs in Space, the deep-dive music history podcast hosted by Sean T. Collins, aired its last episode in July 2024, bringing an abrupt end to a show that had become a cult favorite for obsessive music fans. The final installment wrapped up the third seasonโ€™s focus on experimental rock, specifically a four-part deep dive into the career of Can, the legendary German krautrock outfit. Collins, a longtime music critic and essayist, built the podcastโ€™s reputation on meticulous research, passionate delivery, and a refusal to dumb down even the most obscure musical rabbit holes.

The podcastโ€™s disappearance comes as a surprise because it had seemed to be building momentum. Earlier seasons covered everything from Suicideโ€™s synth-punk minimalism to Arthur Russellโ€™s tragically overlooked brilliance, each episode clocking in around 90 minutes of dense, lovingly curated analysis. Fans expected a fourth season, possibly on another marginalized genius like Miles Davis in his electric period or Broadcastโ€™s hauntological folk. Instead, Collins posted a short note on Substack saying the show was โ€œpaused indefinitely,โ€ citing the unsustainable grind of producing such labor-intensive episodes while juggling freelance writing and life.

The real issue may be the sheer depth of the project. Each episode is essentially a mini-documentary, built from hundreds of hours of interviews, archival digging, and Collinsโ€™ own razor-sharp writing. For example, the Can series featured interviews with original members Damo Suzuki and Irmin Schmidt, plus producers and engineers who worked with the band in the early 1970s. That level of access doesnโ€™t come cheap or easy, especially when the audience remains niche despite its fervor.

What happens next is anyoneโ€™s guess. Collins hasnโ€™t announced another project, but heโ€™s hinted at shifting formatsโ€”maybe shorter essays or a bookโ€”rather than returning to the podcast grind. For the hundreds of thousands of listeners who downloaded No Dogs in Space each month, the silence is deafening. Itโ€™s a loss for music obsessives who crave the kind of deep listening the show demanded, proving that even in an era of endless content, some stories only get told right when someone cares too much to let them go.
