Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has ordered an 80% salary increase for junior soldiers, marking the second pay raise for military personnel in just one month. This increase is part of the government's effort to recognize and support the armed forces as they face significant security challenges across the nation. The new salaries, effective from September, will boost the monthly pay for privates from $73 to $132.

This decision comes amid rising insecurity in Nigeria, driven by threats from armed groups such as Islamist militants and criminal gangs known for kidnapping. The situation has become a critical political issue, especially with the upcoming 2027 elections. Last month, Tinubu announced plans to recruit an additional 28,000 soldiers and create four new army divisions, demonstrating a commitment to strengthening the military's capacity to address these threats.

The salary increase will significantly raise the military's annual wage bill from $484 million to $678 million. Military expert Bashir Galma, a retired major general, welcomed the raise but expressed concerns about the sustainability of such funding in the future. He also emphasized the need for similar salary adjustments for other security agencies, pointing out that maintaining national safety requires a collective effort. Serving personnel remain cautious, stating they will wait to see the new salaries reflected in their accounts before voicing their opinions.

Beyond pay raises, Galma highlighted the importance of addressing broader welfare issues for soldiers, including better uniforms, equipment, and weapons. As the Nigerian government seeks to enhance military capabilities, it faces the challenge of ensuring that funds are allocated effectively to meet the comprehensive needs of its armed forces.
