Big Buck’s, one of the greatest staying hurdlers in National Hunt history, has died aged 23.

The champion gelding, owned by leading trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies, suffered a fatal illness earlier this week. His death was confirmed by Twiston-Davies on Friday morning. Big Buck’s had been a dominant force in long-distance hurdling since bursting onto the scene in 2009, winning four consecutive runnings of the World Hurdle at Cheltenham between 2009 and 2012.

His record at Prestbury Park was unmatched. Big Buck’s became the first horse to win the World Hurdle four times, a feat that cemented his reputation as one of the sport’s all-time greats. He also claimed the Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot three times and the Cleeve Hurdle at Cheltenham twice. His staying power and consistency made him a fan favourite, known for his ability to soar over hurdles late in races when others faded. Twiston-Davies, who trained the horse from the start, described him as “the best horse I ever had” in a tribute shared on social media.

The racing world reacted with shock and sadness. Multiple jockeys, owners, and trainers took to social media to pay tribute, praising not just his achievements but his temperament and character. AP McCoy, who rode Big Buck’s in some of his biggest wins, called him “a machine” and “a joy to ride.” The BHA confirmed no further details about the cause of death would be released at this time, out of respect for the horse and connections.

What happens next remains unclear. Big Buck’s is expected to be buried at his home yard in Naunton, Gloucestershire, where he spent his entire life. His legacy, though, is secure. He leaves behind a record that may never be matched in staying hurdling and a generation of racegoers who saw him as the ultimate example of class and resilience over the long trip. The racing calendar will feel lighter without him.
