The Seattle Seahawks have been sold to a group led by Vinod Khosla for a record-breaking $9.6 billion, marking the highest price ever paid for an NFL franchise. The sale was unanimously approved by NFL owners during a special meeting in Atlanta on Wednesday, following an agreement announced on July 11. This decision aligns with the wishes of the late Seahawks owner, Paul Allen, who passed away in 2018.

The sale comes after an extensive search for a new owner by the estate of Paul Allen. His will mandated that the team be sold, with proceeds allocated to various charities. Khosla, a billionaire venture capitalist, expressed gratitude to the Allen family for entrusting him with the franchise. The Seahawks’ recent success, including a Super Bowl win, made them an attractive acquisition. Khosla emphasized the goal of continuing this success, stating, “Keep the winning streak alive. Get another Super Bowl.”

The $9.6 billion price tag surpasses the previous record for NFL franchise sales, previously held by the Washington Commanders, who were sold for approximately $6 billion. It is also the second-highest valuation in North American sports history. The Los Angeles Lakers were sold for $10 billion last year, highlighting the significant financial growth in sports franchises. Khosla will need to sell his minority stake in the San Francisco 49ers, as NFL rules prohibit ownership in multiple franchises within the same league.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell noted that Khosla’s familiarity with the league, particularly through his involvement with the 49ers, made the sale appealing to other owners. Goodell acknowledged the Khosla family's understanding of the Seattle community and the passionate fanbase, known as the "12s." This transaction signifies a new chapter for the Seahawks as they look to maintain their competitive edge under new ownership.
