A new autism therapy targeting the glycine transporter SLC6A20 has shown promising results, reversing key behavioral symptoms in mouse models even in adulthood, according to research published in ScienceDaily.

The discovery challenges the long-held belief that autism interventions must begin early in development to be effective. Scientists have long focused on early childhood treatments because the brain is more adaptable at younger ages. But this study found that blocking SLC6A20 restored crucial brain signaling linked to social and communication deficits, as well as repetitive behaviorsโ€”core symptoms of autism. The treatment also worked in human brain organoids, lab-grown clusters of brain cells that mimic human biology, adding weight to its potential.

The findings suggest the brain may retain more plasticity than previously thought, offering hope for older individuals with autism. Mice treated with the therapy showed lasting improvements, indicating the changes were not temporary. This builds on earlier work linking glycineโ€”a key signaling chemical in the brainโ€”to autism-related pathways. While the study is still in preclinical stages, it opens a new avenue for drug development, particularly for adults who have had limited treatment options.

Next, researchers will need to test the therapy in larger animal models and eventually human trials. If successful, it could reshape how autism is treated, moving beyond behavioral therapies to include targeted biological interventions. The study underscores that neuroplasticity may persist longer than assumed, offering a glimmer of hope for lifelong conditions once thought untreatable in adulthood.
