MP Materials offers steady returns, The Metals Company risks uncertain future

MP Materials vs. The Metals Company: Which Critical-Minerals Stock Is the Smarter Long-Term Buy?

Investors comparing a longโ€‘term stake in critical minerals are now weighing MP Materials against The Metals Company. MP Materials owns and operates the Mountain Pass mine in California, the only fully integrated rareโ€‘earth mine and processing plant in the United States. The Metals Company, by contrast, plans to mine polymetallic nodules from the deep seabed, a technology that has yet to reach commercial production. The two firms offer very different risk and reward profiles.

Demand for rare earths, nickel, cobalt, copper and manganese is rising faster than ever. Electric vehicles, wind turbines, robotics, artificialโ€‘intelligence servers and modern defense systems all require these metals. The United States is pushing for domestic supply chains to reduce reliance on China, which dominates global rareโ€‘earth processing. This policy shift has put both companies in the spotlight as the market for critical minerals expands.

MP Materials has already seen its revenue double in the last year, reaching $108.5โ€ฏmillion in the second quarter of 2026. The growth comes from higher sales of neodymiumโ€‘praseodymium oxide and metal, used to make some of the worldโ€™s strongest permanent magnets. The company is also expanding downstream processing, turning raw concentrate into finished products. U.S. government priceโ€‘support agreements and longโ€‘term supply contracts give MP Materials a clear view of future revenue, a benefit few commodity producers enjoy. The Metals Company, meanwhile, is still in the development stage. Its deepโ€‘sea mining project could tap a resource worth up to $20โ€ฏtrillion, according to consulting firm Arthur D.โ€ฏLittle, but commercial production has not yet begun and regulatory hurdles remain.

For a longโ€‘term investor, MP Materials offers a proven track record and steady revenue, backed by government support and existing commercial customers. The Metals Company presents a higher upside if its deepโ€‘sea technology succeeds, but the risk is also greater because it has no operating mine, no production history and faces uncertain regulatory approval. As the criticalโ€‘mineral market grows, MP Materials is likely the safer longโ€‘term buy for those seeking stability, while The Metals Company may appeal to investors willing to gamble on a highโ€‘growth, highโ€‘risk proposition.
