More Americans want stronger government oversight of social media companies, a new poll shows. In the latest Reuters/Ipsos survey, 61 percent of U.S. adults said additional regulation is needed, while 27 percent opposed it and 12 percent were unsure. Support crossed party lines, with majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents backing stricter rules.

The push comes after years of growing frustration over misinformation, privacy leaks and uneven content moderation. Lawmakers on both sides have introduced bills aimed at holding platforms like Facebook, X and TikTok accountable for harmful content and data handling. Earlier this year, the Supreme Court weighed in by overturning a Texas law that sought to prevent social media platforms from removing posts based on political viewpoint.

The survey included responses from more than 1,000 U.S. adults collected online over two days in late May. Support was strongest among Democrats (68 percent) but also significant among Republicans (59 percent) and independents (60 percent). Only 20 percent of Democrats and 19 percent of Republicans opposed oversight, while independents were evenly split. Among those who favored regulation, concerns about protecting children online and preventing election interference ranked highest.

The findings add momentum to ongoing debates in Washington and state capitals. A bipartisan Senate bill co-sponsored by Senators Richard Blumenthal and Marsha Blackburn would give users more control over algorithms and content removal. Meanwhile, House committees continue to scrutinize TikTokโ€™s ties to China. With the 2024 election just months away, pressure is building on platforms to actโ€”and on lawmakers to act on them.
