Moroccan authorities detained 111 migrants attempting to cross into the Spanish exclave of Ceuta on Saturday. The detentions occurred near the town of Fnideq, about 3 kilometers from the border. Many of those intercepted were from sub-Saharan Africa, according to Moroccan security sources reported by Spanish media and Reuters.

This action follows a surge in migrant crossings earlier this month, when around 78,000 people arrived in Ceuta in just a few hours. Tragically, approximately 100 of those migrants lost their lives during that influx. In response to the alarming situation, both Spanish and Moroccan security forces have ramped up their presence in the area. Authorities were particularly vigilant this weekend due to rampant social media speculation about another mass crossing attempt.

Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse groups of migrants gathered on nearby hills. They have also increased security measures significantly, deploying army officers, navy speedboats, and drones at the border. Reports indicate that security at key entrance points is now ten times stronger than in previous days. Spain has similarly beefed up its response, sending over 1,500 security officers to patrol the region.

The ongoing migrant crisis has strained relations among European Union nations, particularly regarding border policies. Italy has temporarily suspended its Schengen arrangement with Spain, supported by other countries like Finland and Denmark. Meanwhile, the Czech Republic has called for Spain's Schengen membership to be reevaluated. This situation highlights the complex challenges faced by EU countries in managing migration and border control, especially in light of recent tragic events.
