A church picnic in Lexington drew voters from across Kentucky on Saturday, but the star of the event—Sen. Mitch McConnell—was absent. The gathering, held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, featured mutton sandwiches, bingo and a Q‑and‑A session where attendees could ask the senator about his health. McConnell, the Senate Republican leader, has not appeared at public events in weeks, raising questions about his ability to continue in his role.

The picnic is a long‑running tradition that lets Kentucky voters meet their senators in a relaxed setting. McConnell has been a fixture at the event since the 1990s, using it to connect with constituents and explain his legislative priorities. In recent months, his health has been the subject of speculation after a series of hospital visits and a brief hospitalization for a back injury. The absence at the picnic signals that the Senate’s top Republican may be sidelined for the foreseeable future.

About 1,200 people turned up, including local politicians, business owners and ordinary citizens. The church’s pastor, who has hosted the picnic for 25 years, noted that the turnout was “larger than usual” but that many were disappointed by McConnell’s absence. A small group of voters gathered outside the church to record their concerns, while others simply enjoyed the food and games. The event was free, but a donation box collected over $2,000 for the church’s community outreach program.

McConnell’s team said he is “recovering well” and will return to Washington when his schedule allows. The Senate will hold a leadership vote in early July to confirm whether he will continue as majority leader. Kentucky’s Republican Party will likely decide who will represent the state at the next picnic if McConnell remains out of the public eye. The outcome matters because McConnell’s leadership shapes Senate policy on issues from health care to the economy, and any change could shift the balance of power in Washington.
