Michael Burry, the investor known for predicting the 2008 financial crisis, is maintaining his bearish stance as the S&P 500 hits a record high. In a Tuesday post on Substack, he warned that the current market rally could lead to a significant downturn similar to the stock market crash of 1987. Despite the surge, Burry believes the market may be nearing a peak.

The S&P 500 rose 1.9% on Tuesday, marking its first record close since June. This increase was driven by stronger-than-expected corporate earnings and a drop in oil prices, as optimism grew around the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite also climbed, gaining 2.7%, and nearly 5% in the first two days of the week, further fueling investor enthusiasm.

Burry has been particularly critical of the ongoing artificial intelligence boom, suggesting that the demand for AI infrastructure may be underpinned by unsustainable financing methods. He cautioned that the current market rally could create a cycle where declining volatility prompts systematic investors to increase their market exposure, potentially leading to greater risk. He noted that as the market rises on falling volatility, more investors are likely to leverage their positions, which could exacerbate any future downturn.

Despite the bullish market sentiment, Burry maintains short positions in several high-profile stocks and ETFs, including the iShares Semiconductor ETF, Micron, Nvidia, and Tesla. While he remains confident in the long-term viability of these bets, he indicated that he would cut losses if these trades turn unfavorable. Burry's approach to shorting is not for everyone, he advised, emphasizing that while he feels compelled to take these risks, most investors should avoid them.
