Lionel Messi scored his first two goals since the World Cup as Inter Miami defeated Atletico de San Luis 4-2 in a Leagues Cup match on Wednesday night. The game took place at Nu Stadium and faced a 30-minute delay due to lightning in the area during the second half.

Messi's performance was particularly notable as it marked his return to form after leading Argentina to a World Cup final appearance, where they ultimately lost to Spain. This match was his second since he returned to the starting lineup, having played 37 minutes as a substitute in a 2-2 draw against the Columbus Crew just days earlier. With his two goals, Messi now holds the record for the most goals in Leagues Cup history with 14 goals in just 12 matches, surpassing Denis Bouanga of Los Angeles FC.

Inter Miami overcame an early deficit in the match, with David Rodriguez scoring for San Luis just four minutes in. Messi equalized with a long-range effort and added another goal just before halftime. He also assisted on a goal by defender Micael in stoppage time. This victory extended Miami's unbeaten streak to eight matches, highlighting the team's strong performance since Messi's arrival.

The match also featured controversy surrounding Luis Suarez, who was suspended for six matches following a brawl in last year's final against Seattle. He has been in excellent form, scoring seven goals in his last four matches, but his absence was felt on Wednesday. Messi's resurgence and Miami's continued success in the Leagues Cup are crucial as they aim for another title this season.
