Meta’s stock drops as Zuckerberg pushes AI into glasses

Mark Zuckerberg’s AI manifesto is exactly why people don’t like AI

Mark Zuckerberg published a 6,500-word manifesto on Monday outlining his vision for Meta’s push into personal AI, framing it as the next step toward “personal superintelligence” systems that could live inside phones and glasses.

The move comes after years of criticism that Meta’s AI efforts have lagged behind rivals like Google and Microsoft, which have rolled out flashy chatbots and AI-powered search tools. Zuckerberg argues that Meta’s open-source approach—giving away AI models for free—will democratize access to advanced tools and prevent a handful of companies from controlling the technology. But the manifesto also doubles down on his long-standing bet that AI will become deeply personal, embedded in daily life through devices like Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses.

Critics say the plan ignores real concerns about privacy, misinformation, and the erosion of human agency. Meta has already faced scrutiny over how it handles user data, and adding AI that learns intimate details about people’s habits risks deepening those issues. Some AI researchers question whether “personal superintelligence” is even achievable or desirable, pointing to the lack of clear benchmarks for such systems. Meanwhile, Meta’s stock barely budged after the manifesto dropped, suggesting investors aren’t yet sold on the strategy.

What happens next could redefine Meta’s role in the AI race. The company plans to integrate its AI models into more products, including its VR headsets and messaging apps, while pushing open-source alternatives to compete with closed systems from Apple and Google. But if users reject AI that feels too intrusive—or if regulators clamp down on data use—the manifesto might look less like a roadmap and more like a warning. For Zuckerberg, it’s another high-stakes gamble on a technology that the public still doesn’t fully trust.
