Luigi Mangione has pleaded guilty to federal charges related to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, admitting in court that he shot Thompson in Manhattan on December 4, 2024. The 28-year-old made the confession during a hearing in federal court, where he expressed his intent to kill Thompson after experiencing severe pain from a broken back. Mangione now faces a potential life sentence for his actions.

The shocking incident occurred as Thompson, a 50-year-old father of two, was entering a hotel in midtown Manhattan. Mangione's decision to plead guilty comes after he had initially entered a not guilty plea in both federal and state cases. Following the plea, Thompson's family issued a statement, expressing their gratitude for the progress made in the judicial process and their hope for continued justice in both New York and Pennsylvania, where Mangione was arrested.

In court, Mangione disclosed that he had meticulously planned the attack, traveling from Pennsylvania to New York specifically for an annual investor conference held by UnitedHealthcare. He admitted to using a 3D-printed gun equipped with a silencer, and he even posed as an investor by emailing the company with inquiries about the event. Prosecutors have recommended a sentence of 24 to 30 years in prison, but the presiding Judge Margaret Garnett clarified that she will ultimately determine the sentence, which could reach the maximum of life in prison without parole.

Mangione's guilty plea complicates his pending state case, where he faces eight charges, including second-degree murder. The state trial is set to begin in September. As the legal proceedings continue, Thompson's family remains focused on ensuring that Mangione's punishment reflects the gravity of his crime.
