Manchester United have identified Inter Milan’s 19-year-old striker Pio Esposito as a £73 million summer target. Multiple Premier League sources confirm United’s scouting network has been tracking the Argentine forward for weeks, with scout reports describing him as a “great talent” in the mould of past signings like Romelu Lukaku and Marcus Rashford.

The move follows United’s failed attempt to sign Endrick from Palmeiras last summer and their failed pursuit of Rasmus Højlund in the January window. After a disjointed season under Erik ten Hag, United need a marquee signing to revive their attack and justify the £500 million spent on new players since 2022. Esposito’s profile fits: he’s tall, fast and clinical, with 12 goals in 35 Serie A games this season. He also has a £60 million release clause that rises to £73 million after June 30, making him a realistic target if United move quickly.

Inter Milan have already blocked enquiries for two of their forwards this season—Duván Zapata and Lautaro Martínez—and are unlikely to sell Esposito cheaply. United’s hierarchy, led by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS, are prepared to pay the premium to secure a player who can start immediately and improve their Champions League hopes. The club’s commercial team is also eyeing a global marketing push around Esposito, who has over 1 million social media followers and a strong presence in Asia.

United will face competition from clubs like Manchester City, Liverpool and Real Madrid, all of whom have shown interest. Ten Hag’s job security is now tied to the outcome of this transfer window, with a poor haul risking his position before the club’s planned summer overhaul. If Esposito moves, it will be United’s most expensive signing since Paul Pogba’s return in 2016—a statement of intent that could redefine their summer narrative.
