Paolo Maldini has publicly criticized Italian Football Federation (FIGC) president Gabriele Malagò, saying he personally selected Roberto Mancini as Italy’s national team coach—contradicting Malagò’s claim that the decision was made collectively.

Maldini, who served as Italy’s sporting director during the 2020 European Championship win, is defending his record after criticism of the national team’s poor performances in recent Nations League matches. Malagò has repeatedly stated that coach appointments are made through a committee process, but Maldini’s remarks suggest a more direct role in Mancini’s appointment. The tension comes as Italy, once European champions, struggles with inconsistent results and a lack of clear direction under Mancini’s leadership.

In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Maldini confirmed he was involved in discussions about the coaching role following Mancini’s departure from the club side he was managing at the time. “I picked the coach,” Maldini said. “I had a say in who would lead the team.” His comments challenge Malagò’s version of events and raise questions about whether key decisions were made behind closed doors. Italy’s next competitive matches are scheduled for September, with pressure mounting on Mancini to deliver results after a string of disappointing performances.

The dispute highlights growing tensions within the FIGC over leadership and accountability. Some observers believe Maldini’s public comments are an attempt to clarify his role and push back against criticism aimed at his management of the national team setup. Others see it as a sign of deeper divisions within the federation’s hierarchy. If Italy fails to qualify for the next major tournament, the debate over who is responsible could intensify—and force a reckoning at the top of Italian football.
