Mad World Boards Sales On Venice-Bound Egyptian Drama โ€˜Al Baraneyaโ€™

Mad World, the sales arm of Cairo-based Mad Solutions, has taken worldwide rights to the Egyptian drama โ€œAl Baraneya,โ€ ahead of its premiere in the Giornate degli Autori section at the Venice Film Festival. The film marks the debut feature of Dutch-Egyptian filmmaker Ashgan El-Hamus and centers on Al Amal, a pregnant young woman living with her extended family in a tight-knit but restrictive community.

The filmโ€™s entry into Venice comes as Egyptian cinema gains fresh momentum on the international stage, driven by rising talent and a push to spotlight stories from North Africa outside traditional festival circuits. โ€œAl Baraneyaโ€ fits a growing trend of Egyptian films exploring social constraints, gender roles, and generational divides through intimate personal narratives. El-Hamus, who grew up between the Netherlands and Egypt, brings a dual perspective that has resonated with producers seeking modern, culturally rooted storytelling.

The filmโ€™s plot follows Al Amal as she navigates family expectations, limited autonomy, and the looming decision of whether to continue an unexpected pregnancy. Early reactions from industry screenings describe the film as emotionally raw, visually restrained, and politically nuanced, with strong performances from a largely non-professional cast. Venice programmers highlighted its โ€œurgent humanismโ€ and its potential to spark debate around womenโ€™s bodily autonomy in conservative societies.

Mad World plans a targeted sales push during the festival, targeting distributors in Europe and North America. Given Veniceโ€™s influence on Oscar qualifying runs and award season buzz, the film could emerge as a breakout title for Egyptian cinema this year. More importantly, โ€œAl Baraneyaโ€ signals a shift toward younger, female-led filmmaking in the region, positioning El-Hamus as a key voice in the new wave of Arab cinema.
