Nathan Lukes hit a two-run home run in the 11th inning to give the Toronto Blue Jays a 7-5 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday night at Rogers Centre. The victory kept Toronto in the hunt for a wild-card spot as the regular season tightens. Max Scherzer, starting for the Blue Jays, added another milestone to his resume, moving into 10th place on the all-time strikeout list with 3,516, passing Hall of Famer Walter Johnson (3,515). Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led Toronto’s offense with a solo home run and a two-run single, finishing the night with two RBIs.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading leads deep into extra innings. Philadelphia jumped out early behind a two-run inning in the first, but Toronto tied it in the fourth on Guerrero’s first career RBI of the night. The Phillies reclaimed the lead in the fifth, only for Toronto to tie it again in the sixth. Scherzer, despite the heavy workload—he needed 111 pitches to log six innings—kept his team in the game, striking out eight and allowing three runs over his outing. The bullpen, however, needed two extra frames to hold off the Phillies, who threatened in the eighth and ninth before Lukes ended it in the 11th.

This win was critical for Toronto, which entered play just 2.5 games out of the final wild-card spot in the American League. A three-game sweep would put them in prime position heading into the final stretch of the season. The Blue Jays have been one of the most consistent teams in baseball over the past month, climbing from the bottom half of the standings to the fringe of contention. Scherzer’s strikeout record adds another layer of intrigue, as the 39-year-old continues to defy expectations with elite performance in his 15th major-league season. Philadelphia, meanwhile, remains in playoff position but has lost three of its last five games, a slump that could prove costly in a crowded NL wildcard race.

Sunday’s finale looms large for both teams. A Blue Jays sweep would be a statement win, strengthening their case for postseason play. For the Phillies, dropping the series could further complicate their playoff push, especially with a tough closing stretch ahead. The standings are tightening across both leagues, and every game now carries outsized weight. Scherzer’s chase for more strikeouts could also become a storyline worth watching, as he inches closer to the top five in MLB history. Baseball’s unpredictable finish is in full swing—literally.
