“The Odyssey,” Christopher Nolan’s latest epic, topped South Korea’s box office over the Aug. 7–9 weekend, beating out Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” with $10.3 million in ticket sales. The film drew 1,333,569 admissions across 1,798 screens, securing a 45.13% share of the weekend’s total box office.

This is a rare win for a non-franchise blockbuster in a market dominated by superhero films and local hits. “The Odyssey” faced steep competition from Sony’s latest Spider-Man installment, which had held the top spot for two consecutive weekends. Nolan’s reputation as a director of high-budget, critically acclaimed films—like “Inception” and “Interstellar”—likely drew audiences seeking a more serious, immersive experience. South Korea’s box office has been volatile this summer, with local films struggling to compete against Hollywood tentpoles and studio reboots.

South Korea is one of the world’s most important international markets for Hollywood, often ranking in the top five for global box office revenue. Its audience is known for embracing both blockbusters and prestige cinema, making it a key testing ground for major releases. “The Odyssey’s” strong opening suggests Nolan’s films continue to resonate with Korean audiences, despite the dominance of superhero franchises. The win also signals that mid-budget, original films can still find space in a crowded market—if they deliver spectacle and substance.

Analysts believe this could prompt Hollywood studios to reconsider their release strategies in Korea, potentially prioritizing mid-tier films over franchise sequels. The result might also encourage local distributors to invest more in marketing for non-superhero titles. As streaming competition grows, the Korean box office remains a battleground where only the most compelling films survive.
