The Kennedy Center Board voted on Thursday to shut down most of the Washington, D.C., arts complex for a two-year renovation. This decision follows a federal judge's earlier ruling that temporarily blocked a previous closure approved by the board in March, stating that members lacked sufficient information to make that choice. The board's current plan aims to address significant structural issues and enhance the venue's acoustics.

In a controversial move, the board also decided to reinstate former President Donald Trump's name on the center's entryway, branding it "Restored and Renovated by President Donald J. Trump." This decision comes despite mixed reactions from lawmakers, particularly Democratic legislators who have criticized the lack of transparency regarding the impact of the closure on the institution's future. These legislators, who serve as ex-officio trustees, have expressed frustration at not being provided with assessments related to the planned shutdown.

The renovation project is estimated to cost $250 million and includes major updates such as new marble floors and nearly $12 million dedicated to acoustical improvements. The main building would remain closed until summer 2028, while The REACH, a 2019 addition to the center, will stay open for limited programming and serve as a memorial to President John F. Kennedy. The renovation details were first reported by The New York Times, but questions remain about the qualifications of the construction management firm, JLL, and its experience with venues focused on unamplified performances.

The board's decisions still require approval from the federal judge overseeing the case. Thursday's meeting was conducted via Zoom and was not open to public scrutiny. As the board moves forward, the future of the Kennedy Center hangs in the balance, drawing attention to the intersection of politics, arts, and governance in one of the nation's most prominent cultural institutions.
