Katarina Johnson-Thompson of Great Britain improved her chances of winning a medal in the heptathlon at the European Athletics Championships with a strong performance in the high jump in Birmingham. The two-time world champion's success comes as she attempts to secure her first European heptathlon title after previously taking silver in 2018 behind Belgian star Nafissatou Thiam.

The current event is crucial for Johnson-Thompson, who has faced ongoing injury issues. Leading into the championships, her form was uncertain after competing only once since last September, when she won bronze at the World Championships in Tokyo. Her sole appearance was in May at a shot put event in Loughborough. Thiam's absence from the competition gives Johnson-Thompson a better chance, but the athlete herself has been working to regain her fitness.

In the heptathlon, Johnson-Thompson began in 10th place after clearing 1.83 meters in the high jump, a performance that was only outdone by the top two competitors, Adrianna Sulek-Schubert of Poland and Ireland's Kate O'Connor. Earlier, she ran the 100m hurdles in 14 seconds, placing 15th. British teammate Jade O'Dowda is in 12th place, having recorded a time of 13.21 seconds in the hurdles and a 1.71m high jump clearance.

Looking ahead, Johnson-Thompson will need to perform well in the shot put, traditionally one of her weaker events, to minimize her point deficit. She trails Sulek-Schubert by 141 points and is 80 points away from the podium positions. The heptathlon continues with the shot put and 200m events on Friday, followed by the long jump, javelin, and 800m on Saturday. Johnson-Thompson's performance in these events will be pivotal in determining her standing in the competition and her quest for a European title.
