Jerry Katzman, the former president of William Morris Agency and a pioneering television packager behind hits like "Roseanne" and "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," died on Aug. 9 at his home in Los Angeles. He was 89. Katzman, who helped define modern sitcoms in the 1980s and 1990s, was a quiet force behind some of the most defining shows of the era. His work bridged the gap between creative talent and studio power, shaping how television was developed and sold.

Katzman rose through the ranks of William Morris in the 1970s, a time when talent agencies were shifting from pure representation to active involvement in packaging and producing content. He became president of the agencyโ€™s television department in 1985, just as the industry was moving toward high-concept family comedies and star-driven vehicles. His deals helped launch "The Cosby Show" in 1984, the biggest sitcom of the decade, and he was instrumental in packaging "Roseanne" and "Fresh Prince," both of which became cultural touchstones. Katzman understood that packaging stars with proven writers created bankable hits.

Katzmanโ€™s death was confirmed by his family, who did not disclose the cause. Colleagues remember him as a shrewd negotiator with a low-key style, often working behind the scenes to secure rights and talent packages. "He didnโ€™t need the spotlight," said one former executive at William Morris. "He just made things happen." Katzmanโ€™s influence extended beyond sitcoms; he was involved in early development of dramas and reality shows, adapting to the changing TV landscape.

The television industry today still uses the packaging model Katzman championed, even as agencies face disruption from streamers and independent producers. Katzmanโ€™s legacy lives on in the business side of TV, where the balance between creative vision and commercial viability remains central. His death marks the end of an era in Hollywood packaging, one that helped shape the sitcom boom and the modern TV business.
