Jeff Bezos may soon become a part-owner of Liverpool Football Club, one of England’s most storied soccer teams.

The billionaire founder of Amazon is in advanced talks to purchase a significant stake in Liverpool, according to multiple reports. The deal would mark Bezos’s first major foray into sports team ownership, following years of speculation about his interest in the industry. Liverpool is owned by U.S. firm Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which has held the club since 2010. FSG has previously explored selling minority stakes, but a full sale or majority purchase has never materialized—until now.

The timing aligns with Bezos’s growing focus on sports and media. In 2023, he led a $4.5 billion investment in a bid to buy the NFL’s Washington Commanders, though that deal ultimately fell through. His potential stake in Liverpool would be smaller but still meaningful, as the club is valued at over £4 billion (about $5 billion). Industry analysts suggest Bezos could leverage Liverpool’s global fanbase, which is among the largest in world football, to expand his media and entertainment ventures. The Premier League’s recent $11 billion TV rights deal—one of the richest in global sports—has also made English soccer an attractive target for deep-pocketed investors.

If the deal goes through, it would be Bezos’s first direct sports ownership role. Liverpool’s current owners, FSG, have struggled to turn the club into a consistent title contender, despite financial success. A Bezos-led investment could bring fresh capital and a renewed push for trophies, though fan skepticism remains high after years of underperformance. The next steps will likely involve negotiations over valuation and governance, with a final agreement expected within months. For Bezos, it’s another step into an industry he’s eyed for years—one where legacy and global influence matter as much as profit.
