The iPhone 17 is on track to break a sales record no flagship smartphone has matched in 15 years.

Appleโ€™s latest flagship, released last September, is expected to outsell every iPhone before it, a milestone last hit in 2009 with the iPhone 3GS. That year, Apple sold 20.7 million units in its first three monthsโ€”its highest launch quarter ever. Since then, no single model has matched that pace, despite Appleโ€™s sales growing every year. The iPhone 17 is closing in on that number thanks to aggressive trade-in offers, faster upgrades, and stronger demand in key markets like China and India.

Why now? Appleโ€™s shift to annual upgrades has shortened upgrade cycles. In 2009, users waited two years or more between iPhones. Today, most upgrade within 18 months. Appleโ€™s trade-in programs now offer up to $1,000 off, making it easier for customers to jump to the latest model. Analysts also point to stronger demand in emerging markets, where the iPhone 17โ€™s lower starting price (down from $999 to $899 in the U.S.) has widened its reach.

Early sales data from Appleโ€™s first full quarter shows the iPhone 17 outselling the iPhone 16 by 12% in the U.S., according to Counterpoint Research. Global shipments hit 32 million units in Q1 2025, just shy of the 20.7 million recordโ€”but analysts expect a surge in Q2, fueled by back-to-school sales and holiday promotions. If the trend holds, the iPhone 17 could surpass the 3GSโ€™s record within months.

Breaking the 15-year drought matters because it shows Apple can still drive massive demand without radical innovation. The iPhone 17โ€™s upgradesโ€”like AI-powered camera tweaks and a faster chipโ€”are evolutionary, not revolutionary. Yet, consumers keep upgrading. If it hits the record, itโ€™ll prove Appleโ€™s brand loyalty and pricing strategies can outpace even its own historic highs.
