India's bishops urge solidarity as Nepal-China disaster toll rises to 734

India’s Catholic bishops have called for solidarity with Nepal and China after the death toll from the recent avalanche in the Himalayas rises to at least 734. The bishops issued the statement on Sunday, following the latest update from Nepalese authorities and a joint appeal from the Church in both countries.

The avalanche was triggered by a sudden glacial collapse on Wednesday in a remote high‑altitude area near the Nepal‑China border. Heavy monsoon rains earlier in the month had swollen the glacier, and rising temperatures caused rapid melt‑water build‑up. The collapse sent a massive wall of ice, rock and snow down the valley, burying villages and killing hundreds.
