Huddersfield Giants will leave their hometown in 2027 and play home games at Dewsbury Rams’ stadium as part of a major investment to secure the club’s future.

The Super League side said the move will include upgrades to the stadium at Crown Flatt, allowing Huddersfield to share a smaller venue while keeping commercial costs low. The decision follows years of financial pressure and declining crowds at the Giants’ 27,000-seat John Smith’s Stadium, which they share with Huddersfield Town football club. Super League rules now require clubs to have stadiums meeting modern standards, and the Giants have struggled to fill their large ground consistently.

Huddersfield’s average attendance dropped to around 6,000 last season, one of the lowest in the top flight. The club has not won the league since 1962 and has not reached a major final since 2013. Dewsbury, a former top-flight club, now plays in the Championship but has a stadium with a capacity of around 5,000. The move is backed by the Rugby Football League as part of efforts to reduce costs and improve sustainability across the sport.

Under the plan, Huddersfield will keep its name and branding but base itself in Dewsbury while retaining training facilities in Huddersfield. The Giants’ owners, the Castleford-based owners of the Tigers, have committed to funding stadium improvements and long-term stability. League executives say the move could set a precedent for other clubs facing similar financial challenges. Fans in both towns will now face a significant shift, with travel and identity changes likely to spark debate in the coming months.
