Appleโ€™s AirTags can survive light rain and shallow puddles, but theyโ€™re not designed for deep water or long submersion.

The tiny Bluetooth trackers are water-resistant, meaning they can handle brief contact with water. Apple says the devices meet the IP67 standard, which is common for fitness bands and wireless headphones. That rating means an AirTag can be dipped in up to 1 meter of fresh water for 30 minutes without damage. Itโ€™s enough for a quick drop in the sink or a splash during a rainstorm, but not for swimming pools, showers, or washing machines. Apple warns against using AirTags in saltwater or high-pressure jets, where seals can fail faster.

The rating comes from the International Electrotechnical Commissionโ€™s ingress protection test. The first digit, 6, shows the device is dust-tight. The second, 7, confirms it can handle temporary immersion. Thatโ€™s why Appleโ€™s support page tells users to avoid exposing AirTags to soaps, detergents, or pressurized water. Even so, accidental spills are fine: Apple recommends rinsing the tracker with fresh water if it gets covered in soda or juice, then drying it before reuse.

For most users, the IP67 rating is enough. It covers everyday mishaps like a spilled drink or a quick dash through rain. But itโ€™s not a license to take AirTags swimming or to machine-wash a backpack with a tracker still attached. Apple doesnโ€™t say how long the protection lasts, so over time, repeated exposure to water or drops could wear down the seals. If youโ€™re planning to track gear near waterโ€”like a kayak or fishing gearโ€”consider a case or a tracker with a higher IP rating. Otherwise, keep the AirTag dry and it should keep working.
