Emma D’Arcy says Rhaenyra Targaryen’s death was always planned

Emma D’Arcy — the star of HBO’s *House of the Dragon* — is taking the high road after their character Rhaenyra Targaryen was killed off in the show’s brutal Season 3 finale.

“It’s not what I expected,” D’Arcy told *The Hollywood Reporter* in an interview this week, reflecting on the sudden death of the series’ central figure. “But I’m just happy I made it three seasons.” The actor, who joined the prequel in 2022, leaves the show after playing Rhaenyra through two bloody civil wars, a shifting political landscape, and a dramatic fall from power.

The shock ending capped a season that saw Rhaenyra betrayed by her son, lose key allies, and ultimately face a gruesome fate at the hands of her half-brother Aemond.
