Global hotel giant IHG reported a 10% increase in operating profits, reaching $665 million in the first half of the year, despite disruptions from ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. The company, which owns popular brands such as Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza, shared these figures on Tuesday, noting a 7% rise in revenue from reportable segments to $1.3 billion. Although the growth in revenue per available room, or RevPAR, was strong at 4.1%, it slowed to 3.5% in the second quarter as the impact of the U.S.-Iran conflict began to take its toll.

This surge in profits comes at a time when the global travel landscape is being reshaped by a growing middle class that prioritizes experiences over material goods. IHG CEO Elie Maalouf emphasized this shift during an interview with CNBC, stating that consumers are increasingly willing to spend on travel and experiences. He highlighted the U.S. market as particularly robust, driven by high employment levels and wage growth, which have led to greater consumer spending. The company has also been opening new hotels, further fueling demand, especially among wealthier travelers.

Despite the challenges posed by the Middle East conflict, which impacted about 5% of IHG's business, the company managed to offset losses through strong performance in other regions like the U.S., Asia Pacific, and Europe. Maalouf noted that events such as the World Cup have significantly boosted hotel demand, describing the tournament as a "commercial success" for the company. With sports, concerts, and theater performances on the rise, IHG is well-positioned to benefit from the continuing preference for experiential spending.

Looking ahead, IHG plans to maintain a diversified global portfolio to mitigate risks from regional disruptions. Maalouf expressed optimism about the second half of the year, reinforcing the company's strategy of leveraging its broad market presence to compensate for localized challenges. As travel demand remains strong, particularly among the burgeoning middle class, IHG is set to capitalize on this trend, reinforcing its position in the competitive hospitality market.
