The genetic diversity of the largetooth sawfish (Pristis pristis) has significantly declined over the past 150 years, as reported in a recent study published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences. This critically endangered species, once prevalent in tropical waters across the globe, has vanished from many of its historical habitats.

The study highlights the impact of human activities, such as overfishing and habitat destruction, on the sawfish population. Largetooth sawfish are often caught incidentally in fishing nets and are also targeted for their meat, fins, and rostrum, which is prized in some cultures. The loss of mangrove forests and shallow coastal waters, which serve as crucial breeding and nursery grounds, has further exacerbated their decline. With their numbers dwindling, genetic diversity is also decreasing, making recovery more challenging.

The research indicates that the current population of largetooth sawfish is highly inbred, which can lead to reduced resilience against diseases and environmental changes. Genetic diversity is vital for the survival of species, as it enhances adaptability. The study found that this loss of genetic variation could hinder the species' ability to rebound from near extinction. Conservationists view this as a critical alarm for the species' future.

Moving forward, immediate action is needed to protect the largetooth sawfish and its remaining habitats. Enhanced fishing regulations and habitat restoration efforts are essential to prevent further declines. Conservation programs must focus on genetic monitoring to better understand the population dynamics and develop strategies for recovery. The fate of the largetooth sawfish serves as a stark reminder of the broader impacts of human activity on marine biodiversity, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable practices in ocean management.
