Former Vice President Kamala Harris endorsed Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee in Michiganโ€™s Senate race, on Friday. โ€œDr. Abdul El-Sayed understands that the power is with the people, and that the stakes couldnโ€™t be higher in this election,โ€ Harris said in a statement. โ€œWhile Michiganders struggle to afford everyday essentials โ€” housing, gas, groceries, health care โ€” Abdul has been on the frontlines fighting for working families.โ€

Harrisโ€™s backing comes as El-Sayed, a former Detroit health director, faces an uphill battle in the November election against Republican nominee Mike Rogers. The race is critical because Michigan is a battleground state that could determine control of the closely divided Senate. El-Sayedโ€™s progressive platformโ€”focusing on economic fairness, healthcare expansion, and clean energyโ€”aligns with national Democratic priorities but has drawn sharp criticism from Republicans who call it too costly and unrealistic.

Michigan voters are feeling the pinch of inflation, with rising costs for food, housing, and healthcare squeezing household budgets. El-Sayed has positioned himself as a champion for these struggling families, emphasizing his record in local government where he worked to expand healthcare access and lower prescription drug costs. His campaign has struggled to gain traction against Rogers, a former congressman with strong ties to the stateโ€™s military and business communities.

Harrisโ€™s endorsement could give El-Sayed a much-needed boost, especially among Black voters and young progressives who see him as a fresh voice in the Democratic Party. The race is expected to tighten in the coming months as both campaigns ramp up advertising and grassroots organizing. If El-Sayed wins, it would be a major upset and could signal a shift in Michiganโ€™s political landscape ahead of the 2024 presidential election.
