Google requires 20 gigabytes for Chrome's local AI model installation

Google has updated its Chrome documentation to clarify that users will need approximately 20 gigabytes of free disk space to install the local AI models that power its Gemini features. This announcement comes after some users expressed confusion earlier this year when Chrome began automatically downloading a large file called weights.bin, which is necessary for running Gemini Nano locally.

The need for additional storage has become pressing as Google continues to integrate its AI capabilities into Chrome. The updated guidelines specify that, in addition to the 20 gigabytes of free space, users must have an unmetered data connection and sufficient device performance. While Google has not defined what constitutes “sufficient performance,” the browser will only attempt to download the models if the device meets certain criteria.

For many users, particularly those with laptops having limited SSD storage, the requirement for extra space could pose a challenge. Although the AI models themselves only occupy about 4 gigabytes once installed, the initial need for 20 gigabytes of free space could significantly impact users with smaller drives, such as those with 128 or 256 gigabytes of total storage. For comparison, Chrome's base storage usage without AI features is around 1.5 gigabytes, highlighting the considerable increase in space needed for on-device AI.

Google has also cautioned users that simply uninstalling the files associated with local AI features will not disable those features. To fully turn off the AI capabilities, users must access Chrome’s settings and toggle off the On-device AI option. This move reflects Google's ongoing commitment to expanding AI functionality while navigating the technical limitations faced by some users.
