The best Android phones keep creeping up in price, but this pricing squeeze is creating an unexpected silver lining for consumers: flagship smartphones are starting to look like surprisingly great deals.

According to the latest H1 2026 data from Counterpoint Research , premium smartphones (wholesale prices of $600 and above) grabbed a record 29% share of total global sales โ€” up from 25% in H1 2025. Unit sales in the segment also grew 5% year over year.

Surging memory and component costs have hit cheap smartphones the hardest, forcing mid-range prices upward. Premium OEMs, on the other hand, better absorbed these supply chain spikes through higher profit margins.

As Counterpoint senior analyst Harshit Rastogi explains, as mid-segment Android pricing rises , the price gap with flagship devices, especially older, base, or discounted models, is rapidly narrowing. When a middle-of-the-road handset pushes toward $500 or $600, paying a tiny bit extra for a flagshipโ€™s superior build quality, longer software support , and class-leading processors becomes a no-brainer.

To help smooth over the price jump, manufacturers are aggressively expanding trade-in incentives, structured financing, and buyback schemes. Programs like Samsungโ€™s expanded Galaxy Forever are explicitly tailored to lower the financial barrier to entry for top-shelf hardware, letting buyers spread out costs over longer replacement cycles.

Apple and Samsung continue to dominate high-end sales , with a combined 84% market share, driven by the popularity of the base iPhone 17 and Samsungโ€™s Galaxy S26 Ultra, which features its new hardware Privacy Display. Yet, fast-growing rivals like OPPO (up 69% YoY with the Find X9) and vivo (up 20% with the X300) prove that consumers everywhere are willing to spend more on high-end phones built to last.

If youโ€™ve recently looked at phone prices and thought, โ€œMaybe I should just stretch my budget a little further,โ€ Counterpointโ€™s findings suggest you arenโ€™t imagining things. As mid-range prices continue climbing and manufacturers double down on financing programs, paying extra for a flagship could end up being the smarter long-term purchase rather than the extravagant one it once seemed.
